Kirkstall Abbey is one of the best preserved Cistercian monasteries in the country and is free to visit. The ruins are set in beautiful parkland along the banks of the River Aire. The visitor centre tells you more about the lives of the 12th century monks who lived here, along with objects found throughout the years. The shop sells abbey-inspired unique gifts and refreshments. Each school holiday there is a family trail or activity for children to enjoy. Markets with local sellers and producers take place in the ruins between Mrch and October, check the website for more details.
